Badruddin Tyabji (Tyab Ali) was born in Bombay on October 10, 1844. After passing the London Matriculation he joined the Middle Temple, became a Barrister (April 1867) – the 1st Indian Barrister in Bombay & rose rapidly in the profession. In 1895, as his health failed he accepted a Judgeship of the Bombay High Court. This, as Sir Pherozeshah Mehta stated, was as enthusiastically welcomed by the Hindus & the Parsis as by the Muslims. He acted as Chief Justice in 1902, the 1st Indian to hold this post in Bombay. BadruddinTyabji, he was known as a great Judge & for his courage & impartiality, typically shown by his granting bail to Tilak in a sensational case after it had been rejected thrice by others & by admonishing eminent British counsels for denigrating the Indian National Congress & Indian character. He said, I have always regarded it (Congress President Ship) as the highest honour, higher than being on this Bench let me tell the Counsel that in my Court no contemptuous reference to that body will be permitted. It has a high reputation of being a Muslim minority organization catering to the needs of more than 100 Thousand students from various communities under its umbrella (even larger than university like Aligarh Muslim University). At present the prime focus of the Anjuman is towards quality education, transparency, growth & of course to become world class. Anjuman is therefore fully focused on establishing a Technical Campus in Navi Mumbai having faculties in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Architecture & Computer applications (Information Technology). Besides, Anjuman-I-Islam provides several services & facilities to the society through various programmes & also manages a number of trusts as indicated in this report.
