Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of University. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society. Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained there from, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities. The University was formed by bringing together and integrating two well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras.

• College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) (1794)
• Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet (MIT) (1949) and three Technological Departments of the University of Madras.
• Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) (1944)
• School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) (1957)

Situated in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares. Both the campuses have a variety of buildings serving the various needs of the University community. A third campus extending over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located at present in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies, like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entreprenuership Development Park, and Convention Centre will also be housed there in future. Since December 2001, it has become a large, highly renowned Affiliated University, having brought into its fold about 426 Self-financing Engineering Colleges six Government Colleges and three Government-aided Engineering colleges located in various parts of Tamilnadu State.

Eligibility:

Ph.D:

• Ph.D. Degree in Engineering/ Technology: M.E/M.Tech/M.S. (By Research) in the relevant branch of Engineering or Technology.
• Ph.D. Degree in Science and Humanities: M.Sc/M.A (English)/M.S. (By Research) in the relevant branch of Science and Humanities /M.C.A
• Ph.D. Degree in Management Sciences: MBA / Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management or Administration awarded by Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) / M.S (By Research) in Management Sciences.
• Ph.D. Degree in Architecture and Planning: M.Arch/M.Plan / M.S (By Research) in Architecture and Planning

Part-time Ph.D. Programme:

The following categories of candidates are eligible to apply under part-time programme:

• Full-time teachers of University Departments/University Colleges of Engineering, Govt/Govt. Aided/Self financing Engineering Colleges/Architecture Schools within Tamil Nadu
• Candidates working in Industrial Units/R&D Departments/National Laboratories/Units of Government/Quasi Government or any other research laboratories which are recognized by the University to do collaborative research with the University and sponsored by the respective employer

General Eligibility:

• Master's Degree of this University or any other qualification recognized as equivalent thereto in the fields of study notified from time to time by this University
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering / Technology of the University or any other qualification recognized as equivalent thereto in the fields of study with a minimum of 15 years of R & D
• Experience in National Research Laboratories / Public sector undertakings and with minimum of three publications in referred impact factor journals or two international patents in the last five years.
• A minimum of 55% marks or CGPA of 5.5 on a 10 point scale in the qualifying examination (50% marks or CGPA of 5.0 on a 10 point scale for SC/ST candidates). For M.A.(English) Degree holders including SC/ST candidates, a minimum of 50% marks or CGPA of 5.0 on a 10 point scale

M.S. (By Research):

• M.S. (By Research) Degree in Engineering/ Technology: B.E/B.Tech. in the relevant branch of Engineering / Technology.
• M.S. (By Research) Degree in Science and Humanities: M.Sc. / M.A. (English) in the relevant branch of Science and Humanities / M.C.A
• M.S. (By Research) Degree in Management Sciences: B.E / B.Tech in any branch of Engineering/
• M.S. (By Research) Degree in Architecture and Planning: B.Arch. / B.Plan

Part-time M.S. (By Research) Programme:

The following categories of candidates are eligible to apply for part-time programme.
