Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The IIT system has sixteen Institutes of Technology. The first of these to be instituted are at Kharagpur (estb. 1951), Mumbai (estb. 1958), Chennai (estb. 1959), Kanpur (estb. 1959), Delhi (estb. 1961), Guwahati (estb. 1994) and Roorkee (estb. 1847, joined IITs in 2001).

IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. It has established itself as a premier centre for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country. The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known as Madras. Chennai is the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India.

Eligibility: 

For B.Tech:

• 60% (5% relaxation for SC/ST/PD) marks in aggregate in board examination and JEE (Main) & JEE (Advanced).

For B.Tech & M.Tech (Dual Degree):

• 60% (5% relaxation for SC/ST/PD) marks in aggregate in board examination and JEE (Main) & JEE (Advanced).

For BS & MS (Dual Degree):

• Note: Admission to the particular branch of study shall be as decided by the Joint Admission Committee.

For M.A (Integrated):

• Admission thro’ HSEE
• Final examination of the 10+2 system in Science, Arts, Commerce with atleast 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) and HSEE score.

For M.Tech:

• Admission thro’ GATE
• Regular: B.E/B.Tech/B.Arch. or M.Sc (Chemistry/Life Sciences/Mathematics/Physics) or Associate Membership holders with 60% marks and with GATE Score. IIT B.Tech graduates having 8.0 and above CGPA (7.5 for SC/ST) can apply without GATE.
• Sponsored: B.E/B.Tech first class or 60% aggregate marks in all the four years or AMIE or any other Associate membership (no need for having GATE score) and Sponsored by industry/government organizations/private and public enterprises recognized by DST engaged in R&D work/engineering colleges recognized by AICTE, with two years of professional experience.
• Quality Improvement Programme (QIP): Selection is made through a test/interview. Pl visit http://www.cce.iitm.ac.in/
• Defence (R&T, PGT): Sponsored by Defence Authority.

For M.B.A:

• Admission thro’ CAT
• Regular: Graduates in any discipline with first class or 60% marks and with CAT score.
• Sponsored: Two years of work experience in the sponsoring organization and a valid score CAT/XAT/MAT.
• Selection through group task and interview.

For M.Sc:

• Admission thro’ JAM:
• B.Sc. (Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics) and JAM Score.

For M.S (all Departments):

Categories of Admission: Eligibility Admission thro’ test & interview

1. Regular: Engineering: B.E/B.Tech/AMIE/M.Sc and with valid GATE score or CSIR/UGC NET/NBHM IIT B.Tech with 8.0 and above CGPA (7.5 for SC/ST) on a 10 point scale are eligible to apply MS programme.
2. Entrepreneurship/Management: Master of Arts/MBA with CAT/MAT/XAT/GATE/UGC/ CSIR/ATMA/CSIR (NET, JRF, Lectureship)/GMAT/GRE or MFT(if the concerned dept. opt for it) or At least 3 years of managerial experience in lieu of the qualifying examination.
3. External/Par-time/Staff: Qualifications as mentioned above and national level test may not be required.

For Ph.D (all Departments):

Categories of Admission: Eligibility Admission thro’ test & interview

i. Regular

• Engineering: M.E/M.Tech/M.Sc with valid GATE score or CSIR/UGC NET/ NBHM or equivalent IIT B.Tech with minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10 point scale with GATE score.
• Sciences: M.E/M.Tech/M.Sc with valid GATE or UGC/CSIR NET/NBHM or equivalent IIT M.Sc with 8.0 CGPA can be admitted directly to Ph.D in sciences,
• Humanities & Social Sciences: Masters degree with valid GATE or UGC/CSIR NET/NBHM or equivalent
• Management:: Masters degree/PG Diploma/Associateship/Integrated Masters degree with CAT/XAT/MAT/ATMA/GATE /UGC/CSIR (NET, JRF, Lectureship)/GMAT/GRE or At least 5 years of managerial experience in lieu of the above examination.

ii. External/Part-time/Staff: Qualifications as mentioned above and national level test may not be required.
