The Institute has been named after Shri. Shivappa Gurubasappa Balekundri (born May 5, 1922), who was a Civil Engineer and an irrigation expert. He was the chief engineer and architect of Malaprabha, Ghataprabha, Alamatti and Narayanapur dams of the south, north and eastern regions of Karnataka State. He is best remembered today as Second Visvesvaraya.The Karnataka government has honoured him by instituting an award for engineering excellence in his name. A statue was also erected in 2006 at Alamatti in his honour and a road has been named after him in the state capital Bengaluru. The Institute has five academic departments with well qualified faculty. It is a campus with a serene, scholastic atmosphere consisting of well- planned buildings with spacious classrooms, sophisticated equipment, state of the art laboratories, and internet and wi-fi facilities.

S.G.Balekundri Institute of Technology was established in the year 2008, by Shri Sidddharameshwar Education Trust. It is located in the heart of Belgaum city. Within seven years of its establishment, the college has entrenched itself in the league of the most reputed institutes of Belgaum. The college campus is spread over 10 acres of land,in the midst of an educational locality, flanked by a number of reputed educational institutes.Highly developed infrastructure for the entire engineering course is available which includes

Eligibility:

For BE:

• Admission to 1st year/1st semester Bachelor of engineering shall be open to the candidates who have passed 12th standard or P.U.C 2 or equivalent qualifying examination recognized by the University, with Physics & Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry/Bio Technology/Biology/Electronics/Computer Science as optional subjects with English as one of the languages of study & obtained an aggregate minimum of 45% marks in the optional subjects in the qualifying examination.
• For Karnataka students of SC/ST/OBC & Category-1 candidates, the minimum marks to be obtained is 40% provided that, the marks obtained by the candidate in Bio Technology/Biology/Electronics/Computer Science in the qualifying examination will be considered in place of Chemistry, in case the marks obtained in Chemistry is less for required aggregate percentage, only for the purpose of determination of eligibility.
• For Karnataka students admission to 2nd year/3rd  semester Bachelor of Engineering through lateral entry shall be open to the candidates who hold diploma Certificates or equivalent qualification as recognized by the university and have secured not less than 45% of marks in the final year examination ( 5th & 6th semester ) in the appropriate branch of engineering.
• For lateral entry, the SC/ST/OBC candidates from Karnataka the minimum marks for eligibility shall be 40% provided futher that the candidates should also clear prescribed bridge courses as specified by the university

For M.Tech:

• Admission to the Master of Technology Course shall be open to all the candidates who have passed BE/B.Tech examinations ( in relevant field ) of VTU or any other University/Institution or any other examinations recognized as equivalent there of.
• Admission to the M.Tech course shall be open to the candidates who have passed the prescribed qualifying examination with not less than 50% of the marks in the aggregate of of all the years of the degree examinations. However in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and group-1, the aggregate percentage of marks in the qualifying examinations shall not be less than 45%.
• There shall be an entrance examination for admission to all the PG courses. The candidates who have qualified the GATE examination for the appropriate branch of engineering, shall be given priority. They shall be exempted from taking entrance examination. The candidates seeking admission to M.Tech courses on the basis of AMIE shall also take the entrance examination.
• The engineering graduates from other universities than of Karnataka State shall have to obtain Eligibility Certificate from VTU Belgaum to seek admission to PG course in any of the colleges affiliated to VTU Belgaum. Admissions to M.Tech course shall be open under lateral entry scheme for candidates who have completed one year PG Diploma course of VTU or equivalent course in that branch in which candidate is seeking admission and satisfies all other eligibility criteria.

Facilities:

Library: The Central Library of SGBIT was inaugurated on 07th December 2009 by the Trustees of SGBIT in the benign presence of Poojya Shri Jangadguru Shivaratri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji Poojya Shri Jagadguru Dr.Tontad Siddaling Mahaswamiji and president of S S E T Shir Dr. Siddharama Swamiji of Rudrakshimath Naganur Belgaum, The library with its modern collection of knowledge resources and innovative information services fills an essential role for students and  faculty in their intellectual pursuits. It serves as a resource centre and aims to help in teaching, Learning and Research .The building has a carpet area of 604.15 Sqm At present there are 22,013 volumes and 2,557titles which are updated regularly. It seats  around 150 students at a time in the reading hall. The Library is automated by using Koha Library software (open Source)  for effective management. Library is  a member of Delnet.

Hostel: The institute has three hostels, two for girls and one for the boys. The hostels are provided with clean well  ventilated rooms in a serene atmosphere. Mess facility is also provided for the inmates of the hostel.

Transportation: Good transportation facility is provided to the students and staff. The five college buses ply predetermined routes covering all the key areas of Belgaum.

Health care: The college provides medical care to the students through two resident doctors, one for the male and another for female students

Placement:

Placement cell successfully completed the training for the students of 2014-15 batch, Ethnus the Professional training company from Bangalore have trained the students on the skills viz., Aptitude [Technical and Quantitative], Group Discussion, Personal and Technical Interviews. Training & Placement Officer Mr. Ravindra Yargattimath trained the students on personal interview skills, Resume building & Communication.
