Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences located on B.H.Road near the Bus Stand in Shimoga is an autonomous institute of the Government of Karnataka. It is the only Medical College in Shimoga City. Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences and its attached hospital have a total land area of about 50 acres. Admission to this college is exclusively through state and national level entrance tests.

The Governing body of the Institute is the Governing Council, The overall management of the Institute shall vest in the Director, Appointed by the state Government subject to such terms and conditions as are specified in the order of appointment. The director is supported in the administration of the college, by principal, Medical superintended, chief Administrative officer, financial Adviser, Administrative officer, Heads of the department and other members of the medical faculty. The principal will look after the academic work and function under the guidance of the director. The medical superintendent will be incharge of the hospital and discharge the functions in maintenance of the hospitals under the guidance of the director. Chief Administrative Officer to be drown on deputation from among K.A.S. (Senior scale officers) are any officer not below the rank of deputy secretary to Government, Who shall be incharge of the administration, Financial Adviser to be drown on deputation from state accounts department not below the rank of Joint controller or from the officer of accountant general, not below the rank of Account/audit officer, Who Shall be incharge of accounts. Administrative officer to be drown on deputation from government not below the rank of Thahashildar or section officer of state government. Heads of Department and professors, Asso. Professors, Asst. Professors, Sr.Residents, Jr.Residents/Tutors and other members of the medical faculty.

Eligibility :

• The candidates aiming to get a MBBS degree should have passed +2 or 2nd PUC or an equivalent exam recognized by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
• The candidates should have completed 17 years of age on the December 31st on the year of admission.
• The candidates seeking an admission in PG courses should take up entrance exams and score qualifying marks in it.
• The admissions are based on the mark obtained in the entrance exams conducted at state level or national level.

Library and Information Center :

It is established in 2007 by government of Karnataka. Central library ( library and information centre) is located in attached college building 2nd & 3rd Floor. It is one of the repositories of medical knowledge and forming an integral part of the institution. It is rich in its new collection. This library starting with the closed and open access system. That use latest technology for provision of information through various services. With dedicated library staff is servicing the medical user community with the right medical information at right time.
