Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur popularly known as SIT established in the year 1963, is one among 125 institutions run by Sree Siddaganga Education Society, headed by His Holiness Dr. Sree Sree Sivakumara Swamiji, a centenarian. Sree Sree Swamiji is shouldering the onerous responsibility of providing free food, shelter and education to over 9000 children drawn from the poor sections of the society without discrimination on the basis of caste, creed or community at Sree Siddaganga Gurukula. In addition to this, Swamiji receives thousands of pilgrims and devotees everyday. He looks after the affairs of more than 125 educational institutions and even at the age of 107 years, Swamiji works 18 hours a day. SIT campus is spread over 50 acres and the whole area is landscaped and is lush green. Tumkur enjoys the same salubrious climate as that of Bangalore. At the time of inception, the institute was offering only 3 branches namely Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering with a total annual intake of 120. The institute is now offering 12 UG programmes with a total annual intake of 930 and 16 PG Programmes with a total annual intake of 432. 16 departments of the institute are recognised as research centres by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, where students can register for Ph.D programme and M.Sc. by Research. 152 research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D degree in our research centres and so far 31 research scholars have obtained Ph.D degree from our research centres.

All the departments in the institute have well equipped laboratories. The institute has over 2200 computers and are located in 29 Computer Centres which are all networked with fibre optic backbone. Round the clock internet facility is provided to all the Computer Laboratories, Faculty Chambers, Hostels, Class Rooms, through 100 Mbps leased line. The total number of students in the campus is over 5000 and more than 50% of the students stay in seven of our hostels. The institute has 330 well qualified and experienced faculty members out of which 90 are Ph.D holders and others Masters Degree holders. 70 more faculty members are pursuing their Ph.D programme in IISc, IITs and other reputed universities. The institute is a beneficiary of the World Bank assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme Phase-I and Phase-II. SIT has the distinction of being one among the four self financing institutions across the country selected by MHRD, Govt. of India for establishment of Centre of Excellence in Applied Research and Nano Technology under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) with a grant of Rs. 5 crores.

Facilities:

Hostel: S.I.T. Group of Hostels runs 5 Boys Hostels (4 inside the campus and 1 in town) and 2 Girls Hostels (Located in the town). Together can accomodate 1950 students in a plinth area of 22700 Sq.m. Each hostel block is managed under the supervision of a Deputy Warden who is a faculty member of S.I.T. He is assisted by managers and workers. Each room in all the hostels has been furnished with cots, tables, chairs, book racks and a ceiling fan. Parents and gaurdians of the students are being provided accomodation in guest house on nominal rent whenever they visit college and wish to stay during their visits. They are also permitted to use the mess facilities in the hostels.

Library: The library, centrally located in the campus, is housed in two independent 3 - storeyed buildings having a plinth area of 1533 Sq. Mts. The library building was built by a donation received from Sri T.N. Kempahonnaiah, a philanthropist from Tumkur. The library is having a collection of 1,10,586 volumes that includes 46,158 volumes under General, 34495 volumes under the Book Bank, 14,683 volumes under SC/ST Book Bank and 15270 other volumes. The collection includes reference works such as Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias, Hand Books and Standards. The library subscribes 212 Technical Periodicals of which about 42 are International; it has also a collection of nearly 3993 Back Volumes of Periodicals. The library subscribed the e-resources mandated by AICTE i.e., IEL Online, Asce, Ebsco, Elsevier (Engineering and Computer Science), J-Gate Engineering & Technology (JET), and Springer. These e-resources can be accesses across the campus 24/7. The library has membership with reputed libraries in Bangalore, like British Library, NAL Library, IIMB Library and CMTI LIbrary by which our students and faculty can avail the reference services offered by the above Libraries. The seating capacity of the Library is 450 users at a time, which also includes two separate AC Reading Halls of a capacity of 150 users. The library is computerised with WEB - enabled open source software NewGenLib. The on-line public access catalog can be accessed across the campus through OPAC which facilitates to search the books by author, title.

Health care center: Health Centre is situated in our SIT Campus. It has started functioning from 5th October 1992. Health centre has two doctors and one staff nurse and male health worker and two supporting staff. Health centre has computerized patient data and drug store details. Dr. Sateesh Patil is working as Resident Medical officer since Sept 1992 in Siddaganga Institute of Technology Tumkur, which has a student strength of 4000 and staff strength of about 600. Dr. Lokesh Babu consultant Neuropsychiatrist will be available for consultation on every Wednesday in the evening hours(5.00PM to 6.00PM.)

Resident medical Officer has been provided with quarters in the campus. He offers emergency services after the duty hours in the campus. About 1500 students reside in our campus Hostels and they receive the services from him. Health centre has 3 beds of day care facility and 3 beds of inpatient ward facility for the Staff members and Students of SIT. Daily out patient number of patients in the Health Centre is around 70 to 80 members. Daycare and admission of the patients depends upon the conditions. In case of emergency, we have the arrangement of shifting the patient to the higher centre for further treatment by our own ambulance. We have two ladies Hostels where in we have two lady doctors available for consultation in the evening hours for the students. Maintenance of ladies hostel centre is being done by SIT health Centre. RMO arranges Blood donation camps and Blood grouping camps and Vaccination camps in our campus.

Placement:

SIT is the first institution among the affiliated colleges of the Visvesvaraya Technological University to establish a full-fledged Training and Placement Department with a senior professor, experienced in industry, as its head. The department is responsible for catering to the following needs of students.

The department contacts industries and invites them for campus recruitments.

Guest house accommodation, local hospitality and other infrastructural facilities are provided to the industries to effectively and efficiently conduct campus selection programmes. During the last three years, the department has been successful in getting a number of industries to visit SIT for campus recruitment. These include Infosys, IBM, Wipro Technologies, Wipro Infotech, Wipro Fluid Power, TCS, BPL Telecom, BPL Innovision, MascotSystems, IT Solutions, BFL Software, Trigent Software, Bharti Telesoft, Netkraft, Sonata Software, E-Capital, Philips Software, Robert Bosch, CMC Ltd., BEL, Future Techno Designs, Mistral Software, TVS Group, Maini Group, TAFE, Birla VXL, Mysore Cements, Mysore Paper Mills, Mysore Petrochemicals, Kalyani Group, Triveni Engineering, Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilisers, Karmobiles, Grasim Industries, etc. A large number of students are getting placed in the industry through campus recruitment.
