About Us:

SUNY Plattsburgh is home to a vibrant community of renowned teachers and nationally recognized scholars, dedicated to engaging students and helping them to succeed. Our students arrive from diverse backgrounds and places. But once enrolled, they have one particularly important thing in common: a college experience with the power to transform their lives. SUNY Plattsburgh's remarkable campus culture and environment combine with an exceptionally high quality of teaching to produce success for students. The Plattsburgh experience challenges students to discover their potential, to seek new intellectual horizons, and to learn skills that can turn dreams into realities. It's an experience that calls students to explore new ground and reach still greater heights of achievement. It is this special Plattsburgh experience that makes the College much more than "just another public college."

Preface:

The purpose of this Handbook is to provide an official record of organization, bylaws and other information, which pertain to the responsibilities of faculty/staff members.  It should be used as a supplement to Policies of the Board of Trustees, the undergraduate catalog and the graduate bulletin.  These official publications should provide each college employee with comprehensive information relative to all aspects of employment.  While it is expected that the Handbook will have some special value for newcomers, it is also believed that it will prove valuable to all members of the college community. The material herein represents principles, policies and statements developed by faculty and administration within the college in order to expedite the operation of the college within the framework established by the Policies of the State University Trustees.  Faculty contracts are made in accordance with Policies of the Board of Trustees, and only the Trustees' Policies shall be considered legally binding.

Experiential Learning

You want to learn, but you don’t just want to learn – you want to step out into the real world and make a difference. At SUNY Plattsburgh, you can do just that.

Here, hands-on experiences abound. Childhood education majors play active roles in area classrooms starting the first semester of their freshman year. Communications majors run the college’s radio and TV stations and intern with local and even national media. Public relations majors plan campaigns for area non-profits. Environmental science majors work in an 8,600-acre “lab” of farmland and Adirondack wilderness while conducting research for organizations like the Adirondack Park Agency. It doesn’t end there. Expeditionary Studies majors ski, kayak and climb in the Adirondacks and around the world. Accounting students practice their trade filing taxes for those in need. Hotel, restaurant and tourism majors gain experience working at places like Disney, Tamaya Hyatt Resort, Lake Placid Lodge, and Spirit Cruises. And these experiences are just the tip of the iceberg.

At Plattsburgh, you don’t just learn, you do.
