The University of York
About Us:
Founded on principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, the University of York opened in 1963 with just 230 students. In less than 50 years, York has become one of the top ten universities in the UK for teaching and research – and is ranked in the top 100 universities in the world. There are now over 30 academic departments and research centres and the student body has expanded to 13,000. While petitions were drawn up as early as 1617, permission to establish a university in York was not granted until 1960. The development of the University and its vision was headed by Baron James of Rusholme, the university's first Vice-Chancellor. With Heslington Hall and The King's Manor as the primary venues, the University opened its doors in October 1963 to 230 students and 28 staff. In 1964, work began to expand the University campus to the marshy land around Heslington Hall. The development included landscaped parkland with a central man-made lake, innovative covered walkways, and the many CLASP buildings seen around campus.
By the end of the decade (and on schedule), the University of York's campus included five colleges, three laboratories, Central Hall, the JB Morrell Library, the sports hall and the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall. Undergraduate enrolment had increased to 2500 students. York is a truly global university. We are a top 100 university and our staff and our students come to us from around the world, drawn by our academic reputation and informal approach, and by the opportunity to work or study in one of Europe’s most beautiful historic cities.
York first hit international headlines in AD71 when Constantine was declared Roman Emperor in the city. In Roman, Viking and Medieval times York was a place of political and religious significance. York’s famous heritage now attracts over four million visitors a year. Meanwhile, the University is driving the city’s economic resurgence and attracting world-leading scholars and businesses. The reputation of the University of York for research, and the transnational nature of much of its work, means that people come from all over the world to work on global research and innovation challenges. Over 20% of the University’s staff and 20% of its students come from outside the UK from 132 different countries. As a result, our alumni network is also global, with active groups in London, New York, Boston, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and a range of cities in India, Africa, Europe and Australasia. Global partners include IBM, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Rolls Royce and Unilever. We are members of the premier world research network, the Worldwide Universities Network, comprising 16 universities from the US, Canada, Europe, China, Australia and South Africa. Our international strategy is to offer a wide range of international opportunities to all our students and staff, of all nationalities, through research collaboration and different types of exchange and secondment.
